Given the wide range of the submitted projects, the international jury of the award has wished to highlight not only the professionalism and architectural quality of the entries but also their capacity to demonstrate that a contemporary intervention can keep alive the original spirit and ambition of these elements in order to disseminate and boost architectural heritage.

Neue Nationalgalerie
David Chipperfield Architects
Author: David Chipperfield Architects
Location: Berlin. Germany
Completed in 1968, the Neue Nationalgalerie is the only building by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Europe after his emigration to the US. The need to extensively repair the reinforced concrete shell and completely renew the technical building services required an in-depth intervention. The building has been refurbished and upgraded to current technical standards with a minimum of visual compromise to the original appearance. Around 35,000 building components were dismantled, restored, modified where necessary and reinstalled in their original positions. The functional and technical upgrades include air-conditioning, artificial lighting, security, visitors’ facilities, such as cloakroom and museum shop, art handling and disabled access. Key to the complex planning process was finding a balance between conservation and the use as a modern museum. Essential interventions had to be reconciled with preserving as much original substance as possible and remain subordinate to the existing design, while discreetly legible as contemporary elements.

El Tanque
El Tanque Garden: Industrial Heritage and Nature
Fernando Menis
Author: Fernando Menis
Location: Santa Cruz de
El Tanque Garden is the ecological restoration of a post-industrial area, protected heritage since 2014, that endows the Cabo Llanos neighborhood of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with its first green public space. Set around a former oil tank that had been part of the 1st refinery in Spain and reused as a cultural space since 1997, this banana garden recalls the agricultural landscape prior to industrialization, staging the city as the coexistence of different times, cultures and sensibilities to restore a sense of cultural continuity and belonging. Its layout respects the original geometry of the site and the stone wall, while the base of a disappeared adjoining tank, becomes the perimeter of the new plaza. The injured exterior of El Tanque itself and its elements are rehabilitated and integrated into the general rehabilitation concept that combines heritage, nature and reycling. The biodiverse garden contains 700 trees and plants and includes lighting and furniture designed and custom built with waste.

Regeneration of Gracia’s Neighbourhoods
Jornet Llop Pastor
Author: Jornet Llop Pastor
Location: Barcelona. Spain
Gracia District is one of the most ancient urban areas of Barcelona. It was born as an important rural area, that was independent from the city of Barcelona for a longtime. At the beginning of the XIX century we find the first footprint of industry. It is also an area where Barcelona’s middle-class people built their second residences. All these factors, gave a very special character to the urban grid of Gracia and it has become one of the most important historical city centres of Catalonia. For this reason, it is necessary to create an own and specific regulation in order to preserve the heritage of the character and the atmosphere of this area. The Metropolitan General Plan Modification revises all the urban plans developed on the area and adapts the urban regulations to the current standards of conservation and preservation of the historical urban grids. The proposals are following the direction of promotion and protection of the built and social heritage, the production of new protected housing and the environmental sustainability.

La vie en kit is a documentary on architecture, intended for a wide audience. Its selection in various film festivals (BRIFF, BAFF, FIFA) demonstrates its ability to reach a variety of viewers. At the same time, it is part of a research project exploring the relevance of film to architectural historical research and has been shown in academic contexts. The project originates from the discovery of three forgotten yet innovative, flexible and resilient housing projects of the 70s: Sart- Saint Nicolas (Petit), Patze Englebert system (Englebert) and Mémé (Kroll). The film retraces these adventures up to the present day and is intended as a living archive. La vie en kit is not oriented towards the past. Through three lively stories, it mobilises heritage in its archival, oral and inhabited form to better interrogate our future, as an attempt, as Mark Wigley suggests, “to study and reconfigure the architecture of the architectural archive and thereby come up with more radical concepts of design.”
